Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) is a natural steroid hormone produced from cholesterol by the adrenal glands. DHEA is a precursor to testosterone though it may promote estrogen formation as well. DHEA production peaks in early adulthood, and it declines with age and stress. Low DHEA levels are also found in instances of adrenal insufficiency, and supplemental DHEA can help to boost energy. DHEA 5 is the dose the more common female dose.
